Research Projects

We have three active research projects. The first two are closely tied to basic research questions that interest our industry partner, Statoil, and have collaborative elements of software development by Simula's subsidary, Kalkulo. The third is a Norwegian Research Council activity funded under the FRINATEK.

PaleoEarth

This Statoil AS funded project aims at developing reconstructions of the Earth's surface and its environment, or paleogeography. However, these reconstructions, rather than being a single view of the world, will also contain a measure of the likelihood of such a geography. Thus we aim at moving beyond the paradigm of a single geologist's or research group's model of how the world looked, but rather producing uncertainty maps for industry risk assessment of resource potential.

Challenges in Industrial Computing

High performance computing is becoming available on a laptop, but the development of industry applications hasn't always kept pace with the rapid increases in computing speed and new computing capabilities, like GPU computing. Our group develop algorithms and methods that are innovative, run efficiently and make use of the advances in computational software and hardware. Another development in scientific computing is uncertainty reduction and quantification through stochastic and inverse methods. We seek to make these methods available to the Oil & Gas Industry. The project is funded by Statoil AS.

User-friendly code programming of GPU-enhanced clusters

We want to greatly simplify the task of programming scientific codes that can run efficiently on accelerator-enhanced computer clusters. Mixed GPU-CPU clusters provide the possibility of environmentally friendly computing but are difficult to program effectively on.  The project aims at developing an automated framework that has the potential of increasing the productivity of scientists, letting them focus on the scientific questions rather than optimizing their codes. This project is funded by the Research Council of Norway under the FRINATEK program.
