The purpose of the Resilient Networks (RN) project is to develop and demonstrate protocols and methods for routing and self-configuration that increases the resilience a network has against a number of challenges ranging from failing components and unexpected traffic patterns. A particular focus in RN will be on methods that allow applications and end users to better exploit the existing diversity in the underlying network infrastructure. This includes studying, developing, deploying and testing methods for dynamic multilink access from mobile terminals, simultaneous use of multiple network connections from the home or office, and better exploitation of multi-homing in the core of the network.
RN will use the Norwegian network infrastructure as a test case, and a central tool will be a distributed test-bed built on top of Norwegian network operators’ networks. This test-bed will be used for long-term measurements of the quality and robustness of the Norwegian networking infrastructure, and as a platform for deploying and testing novel networking mechanisms and applications. The test-bed will be used to produce failure models and network characteristics that have universal validity. It is, however, an equally important goal to collect provider-independent information about the particular challenges in the deployed Norwegian networking infrastructure. This information is directly relevant for customers, operators and governing bodies in Norway, and can serve as important input in their decision processes.
Being funded by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, RN will have a particular focus on the interests of public regulatory bodies. We will also focus on solutions that support the needs of network consumers with particular importance for society, such as emergency services and the health sector. The requirements of these user groups can often best be met by looking at the total available infrastructure, independent of individual operators.
Resilient Networks are measuring the robustness and performance of mobile broadband networks in Norway, in collaboration with the e-vote project in the Ministry of Local Government. Check out our project page.
On October 12th 2011, Resilient Networks in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Communications arranged a workshop for operators, government and researchers, focusing on challenges for a more robust network infrastructure in Norway. Program and presentations from the workshop (mostly in Norwegian) can be found here.
