Research Education at Simula - guide for students, postdocs and supervisors

This guide gives you a general introduction to SSRI and its relation to the basic research departments in Simula. Thereafter, separate chapters address the situation of each group of players involved in the educational game: master students, research trainees, PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and supervisors. While this document looks at the greater picture and focuses on information that is static, or at least slowly varying with time, you will find several references given to more detailed information on the web.

It is a complicated task to describe the educational processes in an environment like Simula's, and it has been crucial to anchor the contents of the guide in our continuous discussions with students and staff members.  To formalise the refinement of the numerous ideas simmering in the research groups, SSRI established two workgroups that during the fall 2007 focused on the role of the positions in SSRI and on the supervision of PhD students, respectively. The reports from these groups, written by the workgroup leaders, professors Olav Lysne and Dag Sjøberg, have been valuable input to the writing of this document.

The guide starts with a general introduction to SSRI and its relation to the basic research departments in Simula. Thereafter, separate chapters address the situation of each group of players involved in the educational game: master students, research trainees, PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and supervisors. While this document looks at the greater picture and focuses on information that is static, or at least slowly varying with time, there are several references given to more detailed information on the web.

Clearly, a document like this will have the need for revision and completion, in particular in its infancy. If you have any suggestions for improvements, please convey this information to education@simula.no.

We hope you find this guide to be a useful tool for your work in SSRI, whether as student or supervisor.

The guide is available as a pdf-document for easy printing of the complete guide.
