Measurements from Telenor's outages

Simula has conducted measurements during two recent outages in the Norwegian telecom infrastructure. Around 3pm on 23 May 2011, two independent fiber cuts took place in Telenor's backbone network. On 10 June 2011, Telenor experienced the worst ever outage in their mobile network.

We measured the consequences these outages had for the customers of Telenor, Netcom and ICE respectively. Simula has an infrastructure of more than 80 measurement nodes in different locations in ten municipalities spread around the country. Each node is connected to the Internet through four different providers: one fixed line connection in addition to mobile data subscriptions from three different wireless operators (Telenor, Netcom and ICE). The nodes continuously send ping packets through each interface to monitor the availability and delay of the different network interfaces.

On the eValg project page you will find animations of how the problems developed for each operator during the critical hours. You will also find the initial short reports on our findings (in Norwegian), submitted to the Ministry of Transport and Communication.
