Simula is participating in a new EU project

Simula is pleased to announce that the proposal entitled OPENCOSS (Open Platform for EvolutioNary Certification Of Safety-critical Systems), with participation from the Certus centre, has been approved for funding by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme.

OPENCOSS aims at devising a common open-source certification framework spanning the railway, avionics and automotive industries. It is a large-scale Integrating Project (IP) and will run for three and half years. The project is poised to make a significant and long-lasting impact on the quality of safety-critical software-dependent systems and the way these systems are certified and put into operation.

Tecnalia Research & Innovation in Spain is coordinator for the project, with Simula serving as technical coordinator for the project. Alongside Tecnalia and Simula, the project consortium includes several other major companies and research institutes active in the area of safety-critical systems. Some of these are Alstom, France; RINA, Italy; Atego, France; DNV, Netherlands; Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands; University of York, UK; and Fiat, Italy.

The project is currently in the negotiation phase. The financial contribution from the European Commission to the project is expected to be in the range of € 8.5 million (NOK 67 million) in total. Simula will be awarded nearly 12% (NOK 8 million) of the grant. The main Simula contributors to this proposal are Dr. Mehrdad Sabetzadeh and Professor Lionel Briand.
