Reconstructing the history of the Caribbean since the Miocene
Using an in-house visualising tool, the 4D Lithosphere Model, develop a model of how the Caribbean looked in the Miocene
The Caribbean is situated between two large plates, the North and South American plates. Slight changes in the motion of these larger plates give rise to large changes in the smaller plates of the Caribbean. Investigating its recent history (since about 23 Ma) may give insights into parallel regions studied in the group, such as the Scotia Sea.
Goal
To map out the motion of plates in the Caribbean since the Oligocene using 4DLM
What the student will learn
How to use an advanced visualising tool of global and local geophysical data sets (4DLM)
The geological history of the Caribbean
How plate motions are calculated using rotation poles
