Basins hold most of the world's oil deposits, but are part of a crust that is can be pulled, pushed and sheared by external forces. The structure of the basin can be dramatically affected as a result, allowing oil to migrate away from source. BETMAP aims to study these forces with computer simulations constrained by data in areas that can give insight into the basin-formation process: in the Afar, in the Scotia Sea and the South Fiji Basin.

A Statoil funded project connected with a software developed at Kalkulo, the 4D Lithosphere Model, BETMAP aims at constraining the influence of external forces on basin development using regional reconstructions and numerical simulations.
