GEMINI is a DAADppp project to strengthen the cooperation of the University of Oslo and Simula with the Technical University of Braunschweig. We have common interests in streaming media including the non-interactive kind as used in video-on-demand and the interactive kind as used in multiplayer gaming.
Both the research group CM (communication and multimedia) at the Technical University of Braunschweig and the research group ND (network and distributed systems) at the University of Oslo and at Simula have worked on streaming for several years. The research groups will focus their cooperation on the application areas that both have experience in. For both project partners, this is on-demand streaming of high-bandwidth content at the one end, highly interactive latency-critical low-bandwidth content at the other end, and a limited number of application examples that combine requirements and features of these extreme application areas. GEMINI will provide the means for cooperation by exchange of personnel, which will increase the expertise of both groups. We will in particular use this opportunity to
- Present existing solutions to each other in a series of seminars, and explore collaboratively the applicability of these solutions to mixed infrastructures
- Develop scenarios and (simulated or emulated) workloads that we can expect from the combination of long-distance wired and ad-hoc infrastructures
- Integrate prototype software
- Cooperate in finding commercial partners and applying for EU funding that allows a more thorough investigation of streaming in mixed infrastructures and its application in commercial systems
