The PhD project aims to complete an automated deep-learning-powered shape modeling pipeline for cardiac single ventricle disorders (SVD). This work will investigate the highly heterogeneous population of SVD patients, leveraging magnetic resonance datasets and advanced computational techniques. The project aims to train deep neural networks to learn diastolic and systolic myocardial material properties from measured cardiac shapes, motions and hemodynamics, and use them to compute end-diastolic (ED) and end-systolic (ES) stress and strain distributions. These outputs can lend needed insight into diverse phenotypes within the SVD populations, to ultimately assist with clinical prognostics and planning.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;All SUURPh projects fall within the scope of computational biology and medicine. Thus, Simula is seeking motivated and independent students from a wide range of training backgrounds, but particularly with a strong working knowledge in &lt;em&gt;applied mathematics&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;machine learning, and/or bioengineering&lt;/em&gt; to take up this doctoral fellowship.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The duration of SUURPh doctoral fellowships can be 3 or 4 years, and the time of initiation may vary but can begin as early as 1 September 2025. SUURPh fellows are enrolled as PhD students at the University of Oslo.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As a SUURPh fellow at Simula, you will work closely with your primary SUURPh supervisors in Oslo and at UCSD, and undertake coursework and training related to computational biology and medicine. &lt;p&gt;Research activities at DataSci focus on developing data mining/machine learning (ML) methods, in particular, matrix/tensor decompositions, multimodal data mining, knowledge-guided machine learning, temporal data mining, as well as applications of the developed methods in various fields, specifically, in omics and neuroimaging data analysis. DataSci carries out cutting-edge research on interpretable and explainable methods to jointly analyze multimodal longitudinal data sets.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We are looking for PhD students who will be part of an interdisciplinary research environment with close international collaborators, and is expected to carry out research on one of the following topics:&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Project 1. Explainable Multimodal Learning&lt;/strong&gt; – Data sets from diverse sources are collected in many applications to have a better understanding of complex systems such as the human brain, human metabolome, or to detect early risk factors for various diseases. For instance, to detect early life risk factors of various diseases, multi-omics data sets including genetic, longitudinal metabolomics and microbiome data are collected. Such multimodal data sets are often noisy, incomplete, and multiway (i.e., with more than two axes of variation such as subjects, metabolites, and time). Some data sets change in time (e.g., longitudinal measurements) while some are static. A crucial requirement for ML/data science methods to turn such complex data into knowledge is interpretability. An effective data fusion approach which is explainable and interpretable by design is to learn latent embeddings jointly from multiple data sets via coupled matrix/tensor factorizations. The topic of the PhD research will lie at the intersection of multiview/multimodal learning, representation learning, (coupled) tensor factorizations, temporal data mining and unsupervised/self-supervised learning. The project will focus on developing interpretable multimodal data mining methods that can learn coupling relations from data, identify joint vs. distinct embeddings and incorporate time-aware methods.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Project 2. Knowledge-guided Machine Learning&lt;/strong&gt; – While data-driven approaches have achieved promising results, recently there have been significant efforts to develop knowledge-guided ML (KGML) methods to incorporate prior information with the goal of improving performance in terms of generalizability and explainability, and with much smaller data sizes. KGML methods hold the promise to enhance knowledge discovery in data-scarce domains by guiding real data analysis with clean prior information. A traditional approach to incorporate such prior knowledge in ML has been through constraints or regularization terms added to loss functions. However, constraints/regularization terms are often limited in terms of their expressive power of the domain information such as fundamental principles encapsulated in mechanistic models. The topic of this PhD project will lie at the intersection of multiview/multimodal learning, representation learning, (coupled) tensor factorizations, unsupervised/self-supervised learning as well as knowledge-guided ML. This project will focus on formulating an explainable mathematical framework for mechanistically informed data mining methods.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Both projects will use the developed methods in impactful applications, e.g., analysis of (longitudinal) omics data sets and relevant meta variables with the goal of better understanding person-specific development of diseases, in collaboration with postdoctoral/senior researchers at DataSci, and our international partners.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research lab that conducts Information and Communication Technology (ICT) research in the fields of scientific computing, software engineering, communication systems, machine learning and cyber security. Simula&#39;s main objective is to create knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value to society. This is achieved through high-quality research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer, and commercialisation. Since 2001, scientific evaluations conducted by the Research Council of Norway have repeatedly placed Simula at the forefront of international research in ICT.
