The research interests of Paal E. Engelstad include:
- Cognitive Radio and Dynamic Spectrum Access for LTE
- Various telco-relevant issues: Multi-link hybrid/simultaneous access, p2p & overlay networks, LTE and WiMAX performance, IMS interworking, authentication/security/identity management, IP mobility, IPv6/transition issues, etc.
- Wireless Networking, including the analysis of IEEE 802.11 WLAN performance and Ad hoc networking (MANET, mesh, WSN, scatternet, etc.)

Paal E. Engelstad holds a 20% Professor position at UniK/UiO, where he supervises PhD students and gives lectures at UniK and at the University of Oslo.
Being also affiliated with Telenor R&I, Paal E. Engelstad manages the "SimTel Innovation" project, which is a joint project between Telenor R&I and Simula Research Laboratory. SimTel organizes the collaboration between these two partners in terms of a joint research and innovation effort. Currently, the project is staffed with a number of PhD students (alphabetical order):

- In addition, the External PhD Student Hai Ngoc Pham, who is formally working in the SwisNet project at UiO, is also affiliated with and collaborating with SimTel.
The PhD students of SimTel Innovation are supervised by research scientists from both Telenor and Simula.
