Smittestopp − A Case Study on Digital Contact Tracing
This is the 11th volume in the Simula SpringerBriefs series and describes Smittestopp, the first Norwegian system for digital contact tracing of Covid-19 infections.
The Simula SpringerBriefs on Computing aims to provide introductions to select areas of research in computing. Each volume aims to provide an introduction to, and overview over, research fields that can otherwise be inaccessible.
Smittestopp − A Case Study on Digital Contact Tracing describes the first Norwegian system for digital contact tracing of Covid-19 infections, which was developed in March and early April 2020. The system was deployed after five weeks of development and was active for a little more than two months, when a drop in infection levels in Norway and privacy concerns led to shutting it down.
The intention of this book is twofold. First, it reports on the design choices made in the development phase. Second, as one of the only systems in the world that collected population data into a central database and which was used for an entire population, we can share experience on how the design choices impacted the system's operation.
By sharing the lessons learned and the challenges faced during the development and deployment of the technology, we hope that this book can be a valuable guide for experts from different domains, such as big data collection and analysis, application development, and deployment in a national population, as well as digital contact tracing.

About the editors
Ahmed Elmokashfi is a Principal Research Scientist at Amazon Web Services (at the time of writing this book, he was a Chief Research Scientist at Simula Metropolitan Center for Digital Engineering (SimulaMet). He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Oslo and has more than 10 years of experience as a researcher in the field.
Professor Olav Lysne is the Director of Simula Metropolitan Centre for Digital Engineering and a professor of communication systems at Oslo Metropolitan University. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Oslo, and his experience in research, education, management and innovation reaches back to 1989.
Valeriya Naumova is the Director of Simula Consulting. She holds a PhD in applied mathematics from Austrian Academy of Sciences and has over 10 years of experience in machine learning and applied mathematics.
